Story of Shree Padmavati Mata
Introduction of Padmavati Mata
Padmavati Mata is a revered goddess in Jainism, especially among Digambar Jains. She is considered the protective deity (Shaasan Devi) of the 23rd Tirthankara, Lord Parshvanath. Devotees believe that Padmavati Mata safeguards their spiritual journey and provides blessings for prosperity, wisdom, and protection from obstacles.
Who is Padmavati Mata?
Padmavati Mata is closely associated with Lord Parshvanath, the 23rd Tirthankara of Jainism. As per Jain tradition, she is a yakshini (celestial guardian) assigned to serve and protect him. Though she holds a highly venerated position, Padmavati Mata is not a Tirthankara herself but a divine force aiding spiritual seekers.
Symbolism and Representation of Padmavati Mata
Padmavati Mata is often depicted seated on a coiled snake, with a multi-hooded cobra forming a canopy over her head. She is shown holding various attributes that symbolize her divine powers:
-
Lotus – Purity and spiritual awakening.
-
Noose – Control over desires and karma.
-
Fruit – Fulfillment of wishes and prosperity.
-
Goad (Ankush) – Guidance and protection.
Significance Among Jains of Padmavati Mata
Padmavati Mata is widely worshipped by both Digambar and Shvetambar Jains, though her influence is stronger in the Digambar tradition. Padmavati Mata is also associated with tantric rituals, where her blessings are sought for mystical and miraculous benefits.
Was Padmavati Mata Married?
In Jain traditions, celestial beings like her are beyond worldly attachments like marriage. So, while some texts associate her with Dharanendra, Padmavati Mata is not considered "married" in the human sense.
