Padmavati Mata in Jainism – Introduction & Symbolism

Padmavati Mata is a revered goddess in Jainism, especially among Digambar Jains. She is considered the Shaasan Devi (protective deity) of the 23rd Tirthankara, Lord Parshvanath. Devotees believe that Padmavati Mata safeguards their spiritual journey and provides blessings for prosperity, wisdom, and protection from obstacles.

Who is Padmavati Mata?

Padmavati Mata is closely associated with Lord Parshvanath, the 23rd Tirthankara of Jainism. As per Jain tradition, she is a Yakshini (celestial guardian) assigned to serve and protect him.

Though she holds a highly venerated position, Padmavati Mata is not a Tirthankara herself but a divine force aiding spiritual seekers.

Symbolism and Representation of Padmavati Mata

Padmavati Mata is often depicted seated on a coiled snake, with a multi-hooded cobra forming a canopy over her head. She is shown holding various attributes that symbolize her divine powers:

  • Lotus – Purity and spiritual awakening.
  • Noose – Control over desires and karma.

  • Fruit – Fulfillment of wishes and prosperity.

  • Goad (Ankush) – Guidance and protection.

Her association with the serpent is deeply symbolic, recalling the legend of Dharanendra, the serpent deity who protected Lord Parshvanath from a violent storm.

Significance Among Jains

Both Digambar and Shvetambar Jains widely worship Padmavati Mata, though her influence is stronger in the Digambar tradition.

She is also associated with tantric rituals, where her blessings are sought for mystical powers, protection from evil forces, and miraculous benefits.

Was Padmavati Mata Married?

In Jain traditions, celestial beings like Padmavati Mata are beyond worldly attachments such as marriage. While some texts symbolically associate her with Dharanendra, she is not considered “married” in the human sense. Instead, their bond reflects spiritual guardianship and protection rather than worldly relationships.

Hidden Fact about Padmavati Mata

🔎 Hidden Fact: Ancient Jain temples in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu often feature secret shrines dedicated to Padmavati Mata behind or near the main sanctum of Lord Parshvanath. These were intentionally placed discreetly—showing how her worship, while powerful, was always meant to remain secondary to the veneration of the Tirthankara.
