Parshvanath Jayanti 2025 – Celebrating the Compassionate Tirthankar

Date: Monday, December 15, 2025

Parshvanath Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Lord Parshvanath, the 23rd Tirthankar of Jainism — a spiritual luminary known for his compassion, forgiveness, and non-violence. His teachings continue to inspire millions of Jains around the world to live a life rooted in peace, purity, and truth.

Who Was Lord Parshvanath?

Born around 3,000 years ago in Varanasi (Kashi) to King Ashwasen and Queen Vamadevi, Parshvanath lived a royal life before renouncing worldly pleasures to seek spiritual enlightenment.
At the age of 30, he attained Keval Gyan (omniscience) after years of deep meditation and penance. His life and teachings paved the way for the final Tirthankar, Lord Mahavir, to spread Jain dharma as we know it today.

Lord Parshvanath’s symbol is the snake (Sheshnag), representing protection, awareness, and fearlessness — virtues that guided his entire life.

Teachings of Lord Parshvanath

Lord Parshvanath preached four key vows (Chaturyama Dharma) that laid the foundation of Jain ethics:

  1. Ahimsa (Non-violence): Do not harm any living being.

  2. Satya (Truth): Always speak truth with kindness.

  3. Achaurya (Non-stealing): Do not take what is not rightfully yours.

  4. Aparigraha (Non-possession): Limit desires and attachments.

These principles later expanded into the five great vows (Panch Mahavrat) under Lord Mahavir, forming the ethical core of Jainism today.

Significance of Parshvanath Jayanti

Parshvanath Jayanti is not merely a remembrance of his birth — it is a spiritual reminder to walk the path of compassion and self-control. On this day, Jains across the world renew their dedication to non-violence, truth, and purity of thought.

It’s a day of introspection — asking ourselves, Are we living in harmony with the values taught by Parshvanath Bhagwan?

How Jains Celebrate Parshvanath Jayanti

Across Jain temples and communities, the day is observed with devotion and peace-filled rituals:

  • Snatra Puja: A symbolic ritual that celebrates the birth of Tirthankars with holy water and chants.

  • Abhishek (Ritual Bathing): The idol of Parshvanath Bhagwan is bathed with milk, saffron, and holy water.

  • Aarti and Bhakti: Devotees sing bhajans, perform aarti, and recite scriptures like the Kalpa Sutra and Uvasagaharam Stotra.
  • Fasting & Meditation: Many Jains observe Ekasana or Ayambil Tap (simple, once-a-day meal) as an act of spiritual discipline.

  • Pravachans: Monks and scholars deliver discourses on the life and virtues of Lord Parshvanath, guiding devotees toward inner purity.

The Eternal Message of Parshvanath

Lord Parshvanath’s life reminds us that true victory lies in conquering our inner enemies - anger, pride, deceit, and greed.
His path teaches simplicity, harmony, and universal compassion - values more relevant today than ever.
